Alcohol & Drugs

People use drugs for many reasons – to escape from their problems, boost their self-confidence or simply for the experience.

> But the effects don’t last and the problems remain.

> Eventually, they could even worsen because of drug use, as it weakens your physical and mental independence.

> The less you rely on drugs of any kind the more you are in control.

Local groups and services
Surrey Drug & Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) is a group made up of senior level people from local health, police, education, housing, probation, prison, Social Services and mental health service providers who work together to implement the national anti-drug strategy at a local level. DAAT’s projects include the development and extension of the pre-custody intervention scheme and the DIPSY (Drug intervention programme supporting youth) scheme.

The DIPSY scheme - If there is a drug-related incident in a school, the role of DIPSY is to help the young person stay in education, rather than be excluded from school. Schools do not have to enlist the help of DIPSY, but there are a number of benefits if they do. Natalie Morel explains: “It’s a risk factor if a young person is excluded from school because of their substance use as they are more likely to become involved in serious drug use. The scheme is about keeping them in education and finding alternative interests for them, so they can move away from drugs.”

Pre-Custody Interventions - An arrest referral scheme is being developed across Surrey, where offenders are offered the possibility of counselling and treatment rather than a court appearance and the chance of a custodial sentence. Similar schemes have been set up locally and are proving to be very successful.
