Earn & Learn in Surrey

Earn & Learn is designed for:

> Young people who are working but would still like to go to college part-time and gain a worthwhile qualification.

> Qualifications together with work experience can enhance employability and accelerate earnings potential.

> Employers value up to date skills and people who can contribute to the productivity and competitiveness of their business.

> The Surrey Learning and Skills Council is working with training providers to develop courses to help young people in employment get a head start in their chosen careers.

Who is Earn & Learn for?

> Earn & Learn is for 16 to 18 year olds who are in employment.

What skills training is available?

> There is a wide range of part-time courses available providing vocational skills, whatever work you do and in a whole range of industries.

> All courses offer the opportunity to achieve a Level 2 qualification. However you do not have to commit to a full qualification at the outset.

> Each training unit is accredited which means that you will receive a certificate that states your achievements.

> Many but not all the courses are practical and work-related so you will be able to apply your new found skills directly to your job, and the experience you gain in your job will count towards your qualification.

Getting started

> You will need to talk to your employer about vocational skills.

> You and your employer need to work out what training you require and how much time you will spend in training at college and in your workplace.

> You also need to decide how you want to train: whether you want to spend time in a college on a regular basis, or carry out your training in blocks.

> In some instances you may not need to travel to college at all as some courses are available on-line or through distance learning.

Qualifications

There is a choice of a variety of nationally recognised qualifications that you can work towards: GCSEs, GNVQs, NVQs, BTECs, City & Guilds as well as a host of industry specific courses. These will benefit your career development and you could choose to progress onto further qualifications.
