Dos and don'ts

> Do check out all your options carefully.
> Do find out which subjects you'll need to study for the careers you're interested in.
> Do choose for yourself, as it will be you doing the work.
> Do visit the careers library and check out your options.

> Don't choose subjects so that you can stay with your friends.
> Don't choose a subject just because you like the teacher.
> Don't be afraid to ask for help.
> Don't think about 'boys subjects' and 'girls subjects' - all courses are open to you.

There are 3 types of qualification available for study in year 10 and 11:

General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE)
This is the qualification you're most likely to take if you're 16. There are 8 grades of GCSE: A*, A, B, C, D, E, F and G. You may need to get certain grades for your chosen career.

General Certificate of Secondary Education Short Course Award

The short course award is at the same level as a full GCSE but you only do half the work of a full GCSE course.

Vocational GCSEs

A Vocational GCSE takes up 20% of your study time in years 10 and 11 and will count as two GCSEs. They cover broad areas of work and are available in Art & Design, Business, Engineering, Manufacturing, Health & Social Care, Leisure and Tourism.
