Exclusion from School

If you break a major school rule or commit a serious crime, you could be excluded from school.

> Usually, a school will only exclude a student if they really have to as a last resort.
> Exclusions can be permanent or just for a fixed period of time.
> A fixed period exclusion should not be for more than 45 school days in a school year.

You will NOT usually be excluded for…
> Being late
> Forgetting your homework
> Truancy
> Being pregnant

Also, you may NOT automatically be excluded if you commit a crime.
If you are excluded, then your parents or carers will be told straight away. A letter will explain why you have been excluded, how long for and what can be done to appeal against the exclusion. Schools must confirm all exclusions with the school governors.

Parents and carers do have the right to appeal against exclusions and should do this as soon as they can, within one week if possible. You must be over 18 to have a right to attend any appeal committee. Your parents/carer can ask the school for a copy of your education records.
