Child Benefit Extension
> Should the young person still be unemployed or become unemployed beyond the dates given on the previous page, then their parent/carer may still be able to continue claiming Child Benefit for them under Child Benefit Extension rules for a further period of time.> A form to apply for this can be obtained from Benefits Agency/ Jobcentre Plus offices or from Connexions offices.
> The young person is required to register at their Connexions office in order to qualify for it.
The length of time that Child Benefit Extension can be claimed varies according to their circumstances:
> School leaver (at the end of Year 11)
- Child Benefit Extension may be claimed from the second Monday in September up to and including the last Monday in December.
> College/6th form leaver (between Easter and August)
- Child Benefit Extension may be claimed from the second Monday in September up to and including the last Monday in December.
> College/6th form leaver (between September and December)
- Child Benefit Extension may be claimed for 12 weeks from the second Monday in January.
> College/6th form leaver (between January and Easter)
- Child Benefit Extension may be claimed for 12 weeks from the second Monday after Easter Monday.

Please note: If a parent/carer is claiming Child Benefit or Child Benefit Extension for a young person and is also claiming another benefit for themselves, then the parent/carer may qualify for a top up to their own benefit.
