Child Benefit
> Child Benefit is an allowance paid to parents whilst their child is in statutory education or in full time non-advanced further education up to the age of 19 (or to the end of the course, whichever is soonest).> Child Benefit may continue to be paid for a limited period after the young person leaves education, providing that they are unemployed and still live with their parent(s) or carer(s).
> This is paid direct to the parent/carer; the young person cannot claim this for themselves.
The length of time that this payment continues for depends on the young person's circumstances:
> School leaver (at the end of Year 11) - Child Benefit will automatically continue to be paid from the official school leaving date (i.e. the last Friday in June) up to the first Monday in September.
> College/6th form leaver (between Easter and August) - Child Benefit will automatically continue to be paid up to the first Monday in September.
> College/6th form leaver (between September and December) - Child Benefit will automatically continue to be paid up to the first Monday in January.
> College/6th form leaver (between January and Easter) - Child Benefit will automatically continue to be paid up to the Monday following Easter Monday.
> Please note: If the young person has done some work or training and then becomes unemployed again within the period that Child Benefit would normally be paid, then an application for Child Benefit to be restored can be made.
