Income Support - Can You Claim?Only some 16/17 year olds can claim this benefit.
This is mainly a benefit for people who are not available for work or training. The main reasons for claiming Income Support are:
>If you are in (or have recently left) full time non-advanced education and you are also:
>estranged i.e. you no longer live with your parents/carers for a good reason. This might be because the relationship between you has completely broken down or you are in danger if you remain living with them (physical or moral danger or serious risk to physical or mental health).
>a parent.
>severely disabled.
>without parents, or have no-one acting as parents.
>a local authority care leaver and are living away from parents/carers for a good reason.
>living away from parents/carers and your parents are unable to support you because they are sick or disabled, in prison/ custody or unable to live in this country.
Please note, ‘full time non-advanced education’ means a course up to and including A-Level standard, of at least 12 hours a week, being studied at a school, college or sixth form.
>If you are pregnant.
This is usually only for the period starting 11 weeks before the baby is due and ending 7 weeks after the pregnancy ends. However, if you are unable to work because of illness at any time duringy our pregnancy, you may be able to claim if you get a sick note from your doctor.
>If you are a lone parent.
>If you are a single person looking after foster children.
>If you are a refugee and are attending a course to learn English during the first 12 months of arriving in the U.K.
>If you are incapable of work or training due to a temporary illness
(N.B. Child Benefit must no longer be in payment and you will usually need to get a sick note from your G.P.).

>If you are incapable of work or training because of disease or mental or physical disability and likely to be so for at least a year.
>If you are a carer.
>If you are registered blind.
>If you are getting a government training allowance which is less than your Income Support allowance.
>If you are taking a child or a young person abroad for treatment.
>If you are a person from abroad who qualifies for reduced Income Support.
