Leaflet F - Left education, available for work and living at home
Have you just left school, college or 6th form? Are you available for work or training?
Are you living with your parents/carers?
Your parents/carers will normally be able to claim Child Benefit for a period of time after you leave full time education. Once your parents/carers can no longer claim Child Benefit you may be able to claim one of the following benefits:
>Jobseeker’s Allowance
(If your parents/carers claim benefits themselves or are unable or unwilling to support you, then you may qualify under Severe Hardship rules)
>Bridging Allowance
(If you have been in work or training)
What to do next:
>Register at your local Connexions Office and ask for form ES9 or ES11.
>Take this form to the Job Centre/ Job Centre Plus and ask to claim Jobseeker’s Allowance. An interview will be arranged to check out your circumstances and a decision will be made about your claim.
>After this, and in order to keep claiming this benefit, you will need to
attend the Connexions Office every 2 weeks and apply for jobs and training
schemes.
>Your Personal Adviser can help you decide what types of jobs and training may suit you, and can arrange interviews for you. If you have been working in a job or training scheme and become unemployed, but want to find more work/training, you may be able to claim Bridging Allowance. Bridging Allowance is a short term benefit, and it doesn’t matter whether your parents/carers are on benefit or not.
