Leaflet H - Left college and not living at home

Have you just left college or 6th form?
Are you no longer living with your parents/ carers?

If you need benefit to live on you may be able to claim:

>Income Support or Jobseekers'Allowance
>Housing Benefit (if you pay rent)

Please note: Before Income Support can be paid, the Benefit Agency/ Job Centre Plus will usually want to confirm that you are no longer living with your parents for a good reason. They may wish to contact your parents/carers, but should seek your permission to do so. If you do not wish your parents/carers to be contacted, and your evidence is not accepted, you can nominate a third party to support your claim (e.g. a social worker, voluntary worker or an adult relative). See leaflet A to check your eligibility to claim.Jobseeker’s Allowance

What to do next:

>Go to your local Benefits Agency office/ Job Centre Plus and ask to claim
Income Support.
>Complete the A1 form and attend an interview with the Benefit Agency staff. They will look at your circumstances and decide if you are able to claim.
>The Benefits Agency staff will then make a decision about whether you can receive benefit or not.
>During this time, if you wish to look for jobs, training or college courses you can contact your local Connexions Office for help.
>If you are looking for work and training, you may be eligible to claim
Jobseeker’s Allowance.

What to do next:
>Register for work and training at your local Connexions Office and ask for form ES9 or ES11.
>Take this form to the Job Centre/ Job Centre Plus and ask to claim
Jobseeker’s Allowance. You will then be interviewed by Job Centre Staff who will look at your circumstances and decide if you are able to claim.
>In order to keep claiming this benefit you will need to attend the Connexions Office every 2 weeks and apply for jobs and training schemes.
>Your Persoanl Adviser can help you decide what types of jobs/training may suit you and will arrange interviews for you.
>If you left college or 6th Form at the end of the college year, e.g. in June or July, you may be able to claim
Income Support from the Benefits Agency/ Job Centre Plus. If you are eligible, this could be claimed until the September following your college leaving date.
>If you left college/6th form mid-way through a term and you are not intending to return, you may be able to claim
Income Support from the Benefits Agency/ Job Centre Plus until the end of that term.
>From then onwards you may be able to claim
Jobseeker’s Allowance providing that you are looking for work and training. You will need to register at your local Connexions Office before visiting the Job Centre (see above).

Crisis Loan:
If you are in particular need of money (e.g. for food) and cannot wait until your first payment of benefit is made, then you may be able to claim a Crisis Loan. Please ask about this at your local Benefits Agency or Job Centre for more information.
Housing Benefit:
If you pay rent, Housing Benefit may be available, even if you have been refused other benefits. You need proof of how much you pay, e.g. a tenancy agreement or letter from your landlord. There are a number of extra rules that apply to young people. Forms to start your claim are included in the Benefits Pack available at Job Centres or Benefits Agencies and are also available from local Housing Offices.
