Pregnancy
If an unemployed young person is pregnant and qualifies for Jobseeker's Allowance or Bridging Allowance, they should normally continue to claim these benefits up to the 11 week period before the baby is due.
> An exception to this is where they are deemed to be unavailable for work or training by their GP (if this is the case, they should obtain a sick note and put in a claim for Income Support).
> During the last 11 weeks before the baby is due, the young person becomes eligible to claim Income Support (N.B. young people classed as being in 'relevant education' are not eligible to claim unless they satisfy one or more of the other criteria).
> Pregnant young people may also qualify for Milk Tokens and a Maternity Grant to help with the costs of things for the new baby.

Young people should contact their local Benefits Agency/ Job centre Plus office for more information regarding these.
