THE LAW
Under 16
If you leave home and are seen to be at risk, the law says you could be returned home. If that is not possible, social services are responsible for helping you. If you have problems at home, talk to someone you trust and get advice and help with the situation.

Aged 16/17
The law says you must have your parents or guardians consent to leave home, unless you are married. However, it is very unusual for the police or social services to get involved if a young person of this age leaves home without their parent’s agreement.
Aged 18 or Above
You may leave whenever you want. The law says it is your decision.
For many people leaving home is a natural part of growing up.
However some young people have no choice but to leave home.
Whether or not you can choose, it is sensible to be as well prepared as possible.
What things should I do before leaving home?
1. Think about why you want to leave home
2. Discuss leaving home with your family and friends
3. Find out about your housing options e.g. go to an advice agency to find these out
4. Begin collecting household items
5. Work out how much rent you can afford
6. Work out a weekly budget
7. Buy a local newspaper e.g. see what’s available
8. Look around a few suitable places to stay
9. Pay a deposit and a month’s rent in advance – always get a receipt
Leaving home can give you more freedom, independence and space, but it’s not guaranteed to be a positive space. Some young people end up homeless, in debt or unhappy where they are living because it’s not always easy to find a suitable place or not as easy or enjoyable as imagined.
