3:  Volunteer Youth Leaders Needed!

Something for any young people you know who are interested in volunteering...

Young people causing trouble?.....not in St John Ambulance youth wing. Our Surrey Cadet and Badger groups are bursting at the seams and have waiting lists to join because young people actually enjoy being part of a a group or a team learning and having fun together and helping the community.

What we need to clear those waiting lists and give people the opportunity to reach their potential is LEADERS!

One night a week - the odd weekend - and the commitment they give brings enormous satisfaction. Full training is provided and lots of support from experienced volunteers.

Please see if you can help drum up some new recruits for us - see the attached for more details.

Many thanks

All best

Jane

What’s vinvolved?

vinvolved, England’s largest ever youth action scheme, was launched on 2 April 2008. 107 vinvolved teams, located in every region of the country, will be signposting young people to inspiring opportunities to contribute to their communities. Each team will recruit its own youth volunteering ambassadors to encourage their peers to get involved. Additionally, projects across the country will be opening their doors to give young people the opportunity to get active on issues they’re passionate about.  vinvolved is backed by £75 million funding from v, the national youth volunteering charity. Over the next three years, the scheme will encourage up to 500,000 young people across England to help out in and lead their own projects ranging from coaching kids football, staging music and arts workshops, making films to inspire social change, online peer mentoring, urban tree planting and other environmental initiatives.

Here in Surrey, the vinvolved project is being hosted by Redhill and Reigate YMCA. A team of eight full and part-time professionals, based in Redhill, Guildford and Woking has been appointed, charged with creating over eight thousand youth volunteering opportunities across the county over the next three years. A Surrey Youth Action Team, consisting of young people between the ages of 16 and 25 has been formed to promote the project to its peers and act as a consultation body as well as a Youth Volunteering Forum, consisting of partner, youth involving, organisations.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday 27th June!…………….and please cascade this invite to others!

The apprenticeship scheme is running again this year and we are in the middle of recruiting for that.  Please find attached a poster about the apprenticeship programme and look forward to receiving referrals of young people to the scheme

You will be excited to hear that from the original cohort of NEET young people from Staines and Redhill, some of those young people are about to complete their outdoor learning apprenticeship programme with us and we have actually employed 5 of them as outdoor instructors at the outdoor centres.

7:  Peer Productions is recruiting young actors

Peer Productions is a revolutionary youth arts training company based in Woking, Surrey.  We offer a one-year, full time, free volunteer training scheme for young actors aged 16 - 23 years.  Each year we train a small team as actors and peer educators and provide them with opportunities to lead community arts drama and film projects. These projects then tour to schools, colleges and community groups across Surrey and beyond.  In addition we provide all volunteers with support for drama school auditions and university/job applications. We also offer training in the ‘business’ side of the industry including finance and tax, marketing, fundraising, and CV writing. All volunteers are accredited with a Certificate in Peer Education and Theatre from Peer Productions and have the opportunity to work towards their Arts Award Gold Certificate.

We are currently recruiting volunteers for September 08 - July 09. If someone you know is interested then please visit our website www.peerproductions.co.uk  to download an application form. Please note we will not consider CVs.

Our next round of auditions are on 23rd June 2008.

Job Vacancies for Young People
Did you know that there are a wide range of job vacancies, vacant college places and training courses all over the county waiting to be filled? As the majority don’t have particularly demanding entry requirements, they are an ideal choice for many NEET youngsters.

Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with.

NEET Activities Flyer  - July - Sept 2008

Please find attached a document highlighting a range of NEET activities taking place for young people around the County from July until the end of September 2008.  The aim of the document is to give you an indication of the types of activities/programmes that are available or are currently being undertaken.

The next edition of the flyer will cover the period October - December 2008 and ideally I would like to distribute it to you all week commencing 16th September which would allow you some time to speak with your NEET young people and potentially get them signed up onto a course/programme that may be starting within this period.

If you are involved in any NEET (16-18 year old) activities or know of any activities for NEET young people that are taking place between October and the end of December 2008 then please let me have the following details by 12th September and I will include the programme in the next flyer:

  1. Course title
  2. Brief description, to include, number of weeks, core content, referral process etc
  3. Agency/provider
  4. Dates
  5. Time
  6. Costs if any incurred by young person
  7. Contact name
  8. Contact details i.e. telephone number and email address
