1:  Mentoring Projects
There are currently three projects running that are directed at the very hard-to-reach NEET. They are being run by Plantation, Woking YMCA and Rainer. This work does not duplicate the work of Connexions Personal Advisers, but instead underpins and supplements it so that time-intensive focused work with the young person will enable them to establish a ‘personal pathway’ and ensure that they are ready for you to take them on and move them quickly into education, employment or training.

2.  EMA Marketing Materials

The Learning & Skills Council (LSC) has produced a GCSE envelope for use in schools. The A5 GCSE envelope includes a leaflet that explains about options and choices after young people get their GCSE. Advice includes information about Apprenticeships, A levels and Diplomas. It also gives a brief description about EMA.

Teachers are encouraged to get young people to pre-populate their addresses onto the envelope before Easter, which will then be used in the Summer for their GCSE results.

The EMA Policy team would like to thank PAs for the crucial task they have been playing in informing teachers about EMA and would be grateful for their continued support in getting the message across about this new product that is now available to support them and to encourage schools to order the A5 envelopes before the Easter break so pupils can pre populate them before leaving prior to exams.

To order a copy of the A5 GCSE envelope, please contact:

4:  Surrey Safeguarding Children Board February Newsletter
I’m really pleased to have the opportunity to work with my colleagues in the safeguarding board to take forward the dynamic and challenging agenda of promoting the safeguarding of children in Surrey. I have been impressed by the commitment of staff in Surrey to put children at the centre of their focus and look forward to an exciting year ahead.

5:  Personal Adviser Product Training
The LSC are funding a series of product training workshops across the region for Connexions PAs.  A Theatre Group will lead the workshops and will give a lively performance acted out by professional actors and then facilitate a workshop. The objective of the session is to impart information about Apprenticeships (ie frameworks and how they work), vocational study routes including the new Diplomas plus update sessions on the new criteria for EMAs that come into effect in June 2008, changes to the Entry to Employment programme and information about WorldSkills 2011.  The sessions are designed to give sound product training to new PAs whilst updating more experienced PAs. It is also hoped that the interactive workshops will serve to help share best practice amongst PAs and, of course, these sessions are always good for networking. The target audience is Personal Advisors and Careers co-ordinators in Schools.

All PAs are invited to this unique and exciting training day – please complete the attached booking form and return to Sarah Lickess (details on form)

Job Vacancies for Young People

Did you know that there are a wide range of job vacancies, vacant college places and training courses all over the county waiting to be filled? As the majority don’t have particularly demanding entry requirements, they are an ideal choice for many NEET youngsters.

Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with.

NEET Activities Flyer  - Jan-March 2008

Please find attached a document highlighting a range of NEET activities taking place for young people around the County from January until the end of March 2008.  The aim of the document is to give you an indication of the types of activities/programmes that are available or are currently being undertaken.

The next edition of the flyer will cover the period April - June 2008 and ideally I would like to distribute it to you all week commencing 17th March which would allow you some time to speak with your NEET young people and potentially get them signed up onto a course/programme that may be starting within this period.

If you are involved in any NEET (16-18 year old) activities or know of any activities for NEET young people that are taking place between January and the end of March 2008 then please let me have the following details by 14th March and I will include the programme in the next flyer:

  1. Course title
  2. Brief description, to include, number of weeks, core content, referral process etc
  3. Agency/provider
  4. Dates
  5. Time
  6. Costs if any incurred by young person
  7. Contact name
  8. Contact details i.e. telephone number and email address
