Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with.

 

NEET Activities Flyer  - 2009  

The aim of this section is to provide a summary of the types of activities, events or programmes that are currently available or upcoming, which may interest and be of benefit to NEET young people.

We hope that you can pass on the information and encourage NEET young people with a view to potentially getting them signed up for an activity that may be starting soon.

2.Connexions Training Programmes

Introduction to the new IAG (Information, Advice and Guidance) standards.

 

   

The new IAG standards underpin all work undertaken by the Learning Networks and the introduction of the new diplomas. They also highlight how training providers and Connexions should be working. Please note that all Personal Advisers are required to attend the training.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) – “Everybody’s business” workshop and e-learning

 

Everybody’s Business at http://learning.camhs.org.uk is an on-line learning package for Personal Advisers to access either individually or in groups. It contains extensive participant reading and activities. The group-based on-line learning will use trained e-moderators to help you to work your way through these materials, so no-one needs to do it alone. All participating in the group learning will get a certificate as evidence their Continuing Professional Development. Registration workshops followed by end of learning sessions have been set up on the following dates to assist in learning and ensure that PAs are confident in using the materials

 

The course material is divided into 4 sections to be completed by the end date as shown for each programme

 

   Section 1 – Raising awareness (what is mental health, risk and resilience factors)

   Section 2 – Mental health (diagnostic labels, mental health disorders, assessment, child development)

   Section 3 – Roles and responsibilities (structure of CAMHS, what can be done by front-line, case studies, when to refer on)

   Section 4 – What helps (listening skills, engaging young people)

Safeguarding refresher

 

Staff in all agencies have a responsibility to ensure that they attend safeguarding refresher training every two years. Learning outcomes: To enable participants to update their knowledge, skills and practice with regard to safeguarding children and young people.  At the end of this training participants should be able to:

  • Understand how safeguarding fits in to the Every Child Matters agenda
  • Increase their awareness of the current national guidance and framework for safeguarding children and promoting their welfare
  • Identify how these impact on participants own work roles
  • Develop an action plan for themselves in order to take issues forward.

Pre event requisites: Staff must have attended ‘What to do if you’re worried a child is being abused’ and the ‘Multi Agency Safeguarding Foundation Training.’ Modules 1 and 2.

Drug & alcohol awareness for staff working with young people

This course should help Personal Advisers improve their background knowledge of young people’s drug use, help in the early identification of drug relate issues and develop in-house responses to young people’s drug use. Learning Outcomes:

To be able to

  • Describe the appearance of different types of drugs.
  • List a range of reasons why people use drugs and alcohol,
  • Identify groups of young people who are more vulnerable to problematic drug use
  • Describe the key legal issues in relation to substance use, including protection issues and confidentiality
  • Apply aspects of the course to their work with young people, particularly being more able to talk with young people about drugs and alcohol,
  • Access specialist support, where required.

During the conference we will be holding "How To" clinic sessions relating to any issues PAs may have concerns about.

5. Online Vacancies for Young People

 

Please remember to direct your young people to our website and encourage them to spend a few minutes completing a few questions on our Job Search page which will open up the database of jobs relevant and available to them. With over 120 vacancies on the database this is a valable resource which we are keen to promote.

 

6. EMA and E2E learners

 

Those learners who are on E2E programmes of study that will extend beyond 31st August 2009 will be sent a letter outlining their options nearer the time.

Please note the E2E provider declaration for E2E learners is now included on the application form. This section will be needed to be completed by the E2E provider before sending this to the Helpline Assessment & Payment Body.

Learner Support Stakeholder e-bulletin

In this month’s edition the LSC are pleased to tell you about a new facility to enable learners to request 2009/10 application packs for EMA and ALG online. We also tell you about the feedback from the communications survey we ran in the April e-bulletin as well as updates on the Career Development Loans.

Learners who enrolled on E2E programmes of study that will not extend beyond 31st August 2009 and have not received a full income assessment in the 2008/09 EMA year are not eligible for the EMA Guarantee and should re-apply for support in 2009/10.

8. Surveying Young People

 

Connexions Surrey now has pages on Facebook and Bebo that we’re starting to use to find out what young people really think of the services they receive, and the world they live in.

Our intention is to run a series of week-long mini-questionnaires to keep it interesting and relevant for our increasing numbers of 'friends'.

 

So what do you want to know??

 

If you need a helpful insight into what young people are thinking, this could be a perfect platform for you.

9. Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development: Apprenticeship Scheme

Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development runs an Apprenticeship Scheme for Outdoor Education activity workers and currently has space for 10 young people in its latest intake. This is a 10-month training course in Activities Leadership.  Apprentices take part in a comprehensive training programme, which prepares them to deliver safe outdoor learning sessions to a range of different groups.

Who is it for?

We currently have space for 10 motivated and enthusiastic young people (aged 17 to 19). If you are outside of this age range and interested in the apprenticeship, please contact Gareth Moss on 0777 234 2472.

Where?

On Tuesdays, the apprentices will be based at Merrist Wood College, Worplesdon.  On the other days of the week, they will be collected & dropped off at 2 different locations in Surrey as they will be involved in training at one of the Surrey Outdoor Learning & Development Centre’s (SOLD):

High Ashurst OEC, near Dorking

Henley Fort OEC, near Guildford

Thames Young Mariners OEC, near Richmond

When?

The apprenticeship will run Monday to Friday from September 2009 to July 2010.  Every Tuesday will be spent at Merrist Wood College, Worplesdon.

Training

All apprentices will be expected to undertake and complete:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ in Activity Leadership
  • 1st 4 Sport Level 2 Certificate in Working in the Outdoors
  • Key Skills Level 1 in Numeracy & Communication
  • BCU UKCC Level 1 Coach Award
  • RYA Level 2 Powerboat Certificate
  • REC 2 Day First Aid in the Outdoors Certificate
  • BOF Teaching Orienteering Parts 1 & 2
  • NCBA Canal Boat Complete Crew
  • On site training for other activities  eg climbing

 

SOLD will provide most of the necessary outdoor equipment relative to the prevailing weather conditions.

Job Prospects

There is a shortage of qualified outdoor development staff in the South East of England.  Following successful completion of the scheme, there will be opportunities for paid positions within Surrey Outdoor Learning & Development as well as other outdoor employers.

Benefits

Apprentices will receive a small training grant of £20 a week to help with their expenses. Apprentices are eligible to apply for the EMA

10. Children and Young People's Plan 2009-10

Please find this link to the children's version of the Children and Young People's Plan 2009-10.  This plan sets out the vision for children and young people in Surrey.  This version of the plan was developed in consultation with young people, through a variety of engagement events across Surrey.

 

The plan outlines 5 key priorities and 2 cross-cutting themes;-

 

  1. Reduce health inequalities and make healthy choices easier
  2. Improve family safety, child protection and preventative services
  3. Improve education, training and employment outcomes especially for the lowest achievers
  4. Develop things to do and places to go targeting the vulnerable and disadvantaged
  5. Improving behavior at home, at school and on the streets

 

A.       Right services, at the right time, in the right place

B.       Achieving better outcomes by working together

 

The plan will be implemented through the new partnership arrangements in across all services for children and young people, the Surrey Alliance for Children, Young People and Families.
