1:  Rainer Surrey Floating Support Service
Catch22 in Surrey (formerly Rainer Surrey) Floating Support Service have vacancies for young people who require Housing Floating Support Services

The floating support scheme aims to provide floating support to young people who are at risk 16 & 17 years old and young people leaving Local Authority Care between the ages of 16 and 21 years, who are in need of housing related support in order to maintain and promote independent living and linking in with the five key Every Child Matters objectives (these objectives apply to care leavers and at risk young people up to the age of 18 years):

1.  Staying Safe

2.  Staying Healthy

3.  Enjoying and Achieving

4.  Making a Positive Contribution

5.  Economic Well Being

Every young person will be allocated a floating support worker, and they will work closely with their support network, to overcome the accommodation issues by completing a tenancy sustainment support plan highlighting current and future needs and a plan to address these. This will compliment the Pathway Assessment, Planning and Review (Children Leaving Care Act 2000) process for young people looked after and leaving care.

Capita’s National Safe Spaces for Young People Conference will examine the issues at the heart of the development of youth facilities. Delegates will have the opportunity to hear from practitioners and leading stakeholders in the development of sustainable and effective services.

With £190 million of funding committed through the Myplace scheme and the Aiming High Strategy, delivering 'Places to Go' for young people has received a major boost and is rising up the national agenda.

All Local Authorities have a duty to provide places to go for young people and services can only be effective if partnerships are in place and young people actively engaged in the process.

4:  NEW BME PAs
There are now 3 new PAs in Surrey working specifically with ethnic minority young people. In the case of these young people, obstacles to them achieving their full potential can be greater and more complex as a result of their different backgrounds and experiences.

Young people who have moved to the UK within the last few years could be dealing with many extra stresses in their lives. Even those ethnic minority young people who were born in the UK may be experiencing difficulties because of the tension between their parents’ culture and the culture they experience outside the home.

The 3 new PAs, Mary-Anne Nickerson, Moira Lemprière and Gabriela Clarke, are already working in some schools and colleges giving support with a range of issues, although they are also able to see young people in other settings. If you know of a young person who would benefit from this kind of support, please get in touch.

Mary-Anne Nickerson and Moira Lemprière (01483 237866) and Gabriela Clarke (01483 426990)

Full contact details are on the list of non-VT PAs on the PA Resources page under Personal Adviser Resources.

7:  Woking YMCA’s Y-Pod Youth Theatre
Please find attached a poster for the Woking YMCA’s Y-Pod Youth Theatre, a brand new, free, drama programme for young people aged 12 – 18 years.

The youth theatre runs for 10 weeks each term and explores a new theme each time. The group has been running at the Y-Pod experientially over the past couple of months and responses from the young people have been encouraging. The project has now received funding to continue and it is with delight that we are able to open it up to more young people and promote it further around Woking.

This first term of 2009 will see members exploring the theme of ‘Communities’, however this will be left very open to interpretation as the Y-Pod youth theatre is a youth-led project which values each member’s voices and ideas in unique ways. There are no scripts, no lines to be learned, every member will have equal responsibility and all of the creative work, ideas and storylines will come from the young people themselves. Working in this way means the young people always have a strong passion and interest in what they are creating and this has been seen in past workshops from the positive reactions from even the most difficult-to-engage participants.

The Y-Pod Youth Theatre strongly believes in the potential of theatre to empower and equip young people with the necessary skills to move forwards in life, and that within every young person there is the potential to be creative, and a voice waiting to be heard. Drama is an excellent tool to build confidence and self-esteem and it is these values that the youth theatre lies on.
The Y-Pod welcomes any young person to come along and see how it works at a taster session on 19th January from 6:30pm – 8pm. Joining and attendance each week is absolutely free and there is no obligation to come back after the initial taster session if one does not wish! This term consists of ten weeks and ends on Monday 30th March with an awards ceremony. This is an excellent opportunity for young people to be part of an exciting new arts programme, develop themselves, make new friends, and most importantly, have fun. At the end of each session, the Woking YMCA will be providing free food for any drama participants that would like it!

Please would you kindly put up a poster in your place of work and inform any young person you think may be interested in this. Due to no joining or attendance costs, this is particularly suitable to young people who may have financial difficulties which has prevented them from pursuing such interests in the past. The Y-Pod Youth Theatre is run by myself, Lisa Ramsay, a recent graduate from the Central School of Speech and Drama. I have a Masters in Applied Theatre (Drama Education and Drama in the Community) and am employed as a freelance theatre practitioner, youth worker and am also currently studying for an NVQ Level 3 in Youthwork.

I look forward to meeting some of your young people, please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information.

Yours Faithfully,

Lisa Ramsay MA

Job Vacancies for Young People
Did you know that there are a wide range of job vacancies, vacant college places and training courses all over the county waiting to be filled? As the majority don’t have particularly demanding entry requirements, they are an ideal choice for many NEET youngsters.

Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with.

NEET Activities Flyer  - Jan-Mar 2009

Due to recent staff changes, the NEET Activities Flyer for Jan-March 2009 has unfortunately been delayed.  We would like to be able to distribute this as soon as possible so would be very grateful if you could send details of any NEET activities still open to young people between now and March 2009 to kirsty.baker@surreycc.gov.uk as soon as possible.

The aim of the document is to give you an indication of the types of activities/programmes that are available or are currently being undertaken.

NEET Activities Flyer  - April - June 2009

The next edition of the flyer will cover the period April - June 2009 and ideally I would like to distribute it to you all week commencing 16th March which would allow you some time to speak with your NEET young people and potentially get them signed up onto a course/programme that may be starting within this period.

If you are involved in any NEET (16-18 year old) activities or know of any activities for NEET young people that are taking place between April and the end of June 2009 then please let me have the following details by 9th March and I will include the programme in the next flyer:

  1. Course title
  2. Brief description, to include, number of weeks, core content, referral process etc
  3. Agency/provider
  4. Dates
  5. Time

  • To enhance confidence in identifying mental health problems and develop an understanding of more serious disorders that require specialist intervention.
  • To promote a shared understanding of how the tiered system works and how it can be integrated with the levels of service described in Every Child Matters.
  • To develop an awareness of local services and their contribution.
  • To explore the issues involved in inter-agency working.
  • To encourage personal and professional efficacy in working within the CAMHS structure and local systems.
  • To reinforce existing competence in working with young people and families.
  • To build confidence in working with mental health problems.

Details on how to register and access this course are attached.

CAMHS Twilight Session

PAs will have already accessed the online training package (Everybody's Business) before attending a CAMHS twilight and that by the time of the twilight they will have either completed the course or be near to completion.

Aim: The twilights are designed as a "question and answer" session to address any issues PAs have encountered in the training that have not been answered by the e learning itself.  Also to help them to make links between the theoretical knowledge and their practice, and to think about how local CAMHS operates.  As such, there are no separate outcomes for the twilight and there will be no pre-reading etc, as PAs will have done this during their completion of the e-learning package.

Benefits for Young People

Benefits for young people is the ‘Cinderella’ service of the department for Work and Pensions. The rules governing benefit entitlement are complex and are often misunderstood and misinterpreted not only by those who work with young people but by Jobcentre staff.

This one-day course aims to de-mystify the benefits system for young people and give young people’s advisers/workers the confidence to negotiate the ‘benefits maze’ on their behalf.

A detailed course programme will be forwarded nearer the day but it will include:

Benefits for 16 & 17 year olds

The impact of care and/or educational status

Young people with disabilities and/or incapable of work

Housing benefit

Community Care Grants form the Social Fund

Severe hardship payments

Negotiating with the benefits system
