Job Opportunities for Young People: Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with. Please also direct your young people to our website and encourage them to spend a few minutes completing a few questions which will open up the database of jobs relevant and available to them.

Introduction to ADAPT
Aim - To provide training on the use of Adapt and obtain a good understanding of the system. As a result of the course participants should have a good understanding of Adapt and be able to record work with clients. The course covers:
- Adding and amending records for clients
- Recording contacts/plans
- Recording letters and telephone contacts
- Joining and leaving clients to NEET
- Recording a Potential/Actual Endorsement
- Recording Group Sessions etc
- Be able to record work with providers/opportunities
- Adding new providers
- Amending records
- Recording a visit
- Adding and submitting to an opportunity
- Recording the outcome of a submission
- Putting an opportunity on HOLD and then back on to LIVE & Cancelling an Opportunity

Identifying young people’s drug/alcohol related needs
Places are now available on this newly commissioned course.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course participants will:
• Have refreshed their understanding of young people's drug and alcohol use.
• Looked at ways of assessing a young person’s drug/alcohol use in terms of the harm it can cause the user, their family and the community.
• Be able to use the Tool to Identify Young People’s Drug/Alcohol Needs (which is part of the Common Assessment Framework).
• Be aware of drug and alcohol services for young people and how to refer to them.

Preventing Teenage Pregnancy and promoting young peoples’ sexual health well - being.
Aim: To be equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to support the needs of young people in relation to their sexual health and relationships.
Professionals are appropriately skilled and confident to support teenage parents to improve their own life chances and those of their children.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course participants will have had the opportunity to:
Learn about the concept and model of delay and how it differs from ‘abstinence’ work.
Explore a range of practical ways of working with young people to help them make positive and healthy decisions for themselves.
Gain an understanding of the different types of contraception available including emergency contraception and long acting reversible contraception and how they work.
Be able to appropriately support young people to access sexual health services.
Gain knowledge of the different types of sexually transmitted infections (STI’s)
Develop a further understanding of key legal and policy issues relating to young peoples sexual health.
Ensure that young people are aware of the range of locally provided sexual health resources and services and how to signpost to them.

Young people and mental health
Aim: To understand the emerging signs of mental health problems in young people.
Content: This course focuses on current thinking and practice in the expanding field of young people and mental health. When is an apparent mental health problem ‘just part of growing up’? What are the emerging signs of mental illness in younger people? How, as professionals, can we assess and intervene effectively whilst being aware of the dangers of stigmatisation?
Target audience: This 1-day course will benefit all those who work directly with children and young people and their families
Objectives:
By the end of the training participants should be able to:
Identify the developmental tasks of adolescence,
Identify severe emotional/behavioural disturbances in young people,
Understand current development in the law and service development,
Develop risk management skills and ways of effective working,
Develop skills in working with the young person within the family context.

CAF One Day Multi-Agency training for Users- now a Half Day training course
Course aim: To enable participants to gain a good understanding of the purpose and process of the Common Assessment Framework (CAF). To enable participants to use the Common Assessment Framework in practice to improve outcomes for children, young people and families.
Conditions of acceptance of a place on this course: All participants must have agreed with their manager to attend the course.
Please note: As these courses are now half a day, lunch we will no longer be provided. However, feel free to take your pack lunch.
CAF Half Day Lead Professional Training: This course remains a half-day course, starting at 1.30pm to finish at 4.30pm. To book a place, please select CAF Half Day Lead Professional Training from the CAF Training page. Most dates are now combined with the Half Day Multi-Agency Training as explained above.
If you want to book onto either of the courses mentioned above please select CAF Half Day Multi-Agency training for Users from the CAF training page and complete the e-booking form.
Prior to attending either the CAF Half Day Multi-Agency training and the CAF Half Day Lead Professional Training, it is mandatory to complete the CAF Basic Awareness e-learning course and the CAF Lead Professional e-learning course. If not completed, this will affect your learning on the day. It is also advisable to complete the Information Sharing e-learning course and the Integrated Working e-learning course. These courses are intended to give all staff and partner agencies a good understanding of the CAF assessment, the role of a Lead Professional and Integrated working and are open to all Connexions Personal Advisers. Bookings can be made on both the internal and external SCC websites.
How to book a place on the Multi-Agency Training for Users Course?
Click on the e-booking form links as above
Select a suitable date and venue, click on 2009 at the top. This will put the dates in order from January 2009. The form will display by clicking on the selected date.
Complete and submit the form. Please allow a few minutes for your form to go through the system.
Make sure you print a copy to keep a record of your booking with the reference number and details of the venue.

CAF training -Half day refresher course for users
This course has been designed for professionals who have received training eight to twelve months ago and for professionals who are already familiar with the ECM Agenda and the Assessment Framework
It is vital at this time for the CAF implementation across the County, which is gathering pace that all professionals are up to date and secure in their understanding of the CAF 5-Step process. Attendance will give an opportunity to professionals to update their knowledge on current CAF processes and new arrangements to query if a CAF Assessment has already been undertaken on a child. To book a place, complete the attached e-booking form online and keep a copy for your records once you have submitted it. 5. New CAF DVD for young people in Surrey
'CAF Welcome to a new way of helping young people' has been a joint project
between the Surrey CAF Team, Blenheim High School and Youth Development Service. A successful bid to the countywide Youth Opportunity Fund has given the young people the funding to bring their ideas to life!
The aim of the project is to help young people get the right help at the right time. It is about raising awareness to young people that the CAF exists and how it can help them.
The DVD was launched at the Odeon Epsom, which provided a celebration of their work. The DVD is now being distributed to Schools, Children Centres, Youth Centres, Connexions and Health Centres.
How can you use this DVD?

The Trustees of are looking to appoint a dynamic individual who engages and communicates well with young people. This new appointment will create and develop programmes, which provide intensive support for young people with behavioral, emotional and social difficulties and encourage their personal development. This work will take place in Rydens and Heathside Schools in Walton on Thames and Weybridge respectively.
The successful candidate must demonstrate abilities in the following areas:
- Engages and communicates well with young people, colleagues and parents
- Is highly self-motivated and creative.
- Is able to work well within a team as well as on their own.
- Has good management and organisational skills
- Has good administrative skills to track and evaluate the progress of individuals and keep appropriate records in accordance with school and funding requirements
- Has the ability to network well with our various partners and other outside agencies

Surrey Vinvolved is part of the national youth volunteering initiative, which was originally conceived by the Russell Commission on Youth Action and Engagement in 2004. Funded with £75 million of government money, the national charity “V” was set up in 2006 to administer the initiative on a national level, and in 2008 teams and projects around the country were selected and funded to engage young people between the ages of 16 and 25, and encourage them to take part in volunteering and community action.
