2:  Sutton Trust Report

The Sutton Trust report ‘Knowing Where to Study? Fees, Bursaries and Fair Access’ was published in February 2008. The report highlighted that a significant proportion of young people do not fully understand the different types of financial support available to them. In particular, disadvantaged young people did not receive information on bursaries early enough for this to influence their decisions about university applications, leading to several choosing local universities for financial reasons.

Those responsible for advising young people should be aware of the site

www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance, which gives useful background information on Bursaries and Scholarships and provides a link to a 'Bursary Map'. Timely advice on this issue will assist young people in their applications and help ensure they make the right choice for them.

Contact details can be found on the website at: http://www.direct.gov.uk

4:  New NHS Careers Website
New resources to help teachers and careers advisers raise awareness of the 350 different careers in the NHS are now available on the NHS Careers website.  Teaching resources to help students learn more about the 350 careers in the NHS were launched this month.  It is the next phase of the 'Step into the NHS' campaign to get 14-19 year olds thinking about careers in the NHS.

Research by NHS Careers in 2007 said that 49% of teenages were considering a career in the NHS, but only two per cent were thinking about a career outside of medicine, nursing or midwifery.  Available on the NHS Careers website, the ten activities are interactive, and use the games and videos from the 'Step into the NHS' website, including a career mapper and personality test.

Step into the NHS was launched in June 2007 to raise awareness of the 350 careers in the NHS amongst 14-19 year olds.  Not only are they suitable for careers lessons, but can be used in English, drama, citizenship, PSHE and the new Society, Health & Development diploma to be launched in September.  Further information can be found at www.stepintothenhs.nhs.uk and www.nhscareers.nhs.uk

Job Vacancies for Young People

Did you know that there are a wide range of job vacancies, vacant college places and training courses all over the county waiting to be filled? As the majority don’t have particularly demanding entry requirements, they are an ideal choice for many NEET youngsters.

Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with.

NEET Activities Flyer  - April-June 2008

Please find attached a document highlighting a range of NEET activities taking place for young people around the County from April until the end of June 2008.  The aim of the document is to give you an indication of the types of activities/programmes that are available or are currently being undertaken.

The next edition of the flyer will cover the period July - September 2008 and ideally I would like to distribute it to you all week commencing 16th June which would allow you some time to speak with your NEET young people and potentially get them signed up onto a course/programme that may be starting within this period.

If you are involved in any NEET (16-18 year old) activities or know of any activities for NEET young people that are taking place between July and the end of September 2008 then please let me have the following details by 13th June and I will include the programme in the next flyer:

  1. Course title
  2. Brief description, to include, number of weeks, core content, referral process etc
  3. Agency/provider
  4. Dates
  5. Time
  6. Costs if any incurred by young person
  7. Contact name
  8. Contact details i.e. telephone number and email address
