8. Reaching for Gold - Competition
As you know there is a growing range of initiatives to support young people’s involvement in activities allied to London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. One of these is an exciting competition called Reaching for Gold. We need your help to promote the competition to 14-19 providers and to help identify potential teams of young people to apply – we want this to be a real success across the region. But time is tight and applications need to be submitted via the Reaching for Gold website by 2nd October 2009. www.reachingforgold.org.uk
Reaching for Gold challenges young people to design projects which will make a difference to their local communities and then helps them to develop these into commercially viable projects, supported by business people and /or experts from the voluntary and community sector. The competition has been designed and supported by SEEDA and a number of blue chip companies, including BT; Cisco; Honda; Huawei; Intel; Legal & General; PricewaterhouseCoopers; Sony; and Toshiba. It is open to any team of up to 10 young people aged 14-19 – those at school, college, employed or involved with other forms of learning. Existing ideas developed in curriculum areas such as Citizenship and PSHE may be proposed.
The first stage of the competition involves making an online application (from the organisation/provider) that explains the team’s idea and how it would be put into practice. The proposed project must be designed to benefit a particular section of the community – such as young people, the disabled or those disadvantaged – and the judges will expect the would-be beneficiaries to have been have been involved in developing the teams’ ideas.
The nine teams who make it through the first round will be awarded a cache of project enabling equipment, including the latest in laptops, complete with webcam, mobile notes E-Pen and camcorder. Each team will be allocated a business mentor from one of the supporting companies. Further help from business experts and the voluntary sector will also be on hand, and all the teams will have the opportunity to work with young people living in other countries. The overall winning team will receive a cheque for £5,000 to support future development of their wining idea.
All schools, colleges and training providers involved with the 14-19 group have been notified and in parallel with this, we want to target, contact and support organisations where there is good chance they will be interested in this competition.
Please could you identify any providers, organisations or groups who you work with and who might be interested in this fabulous opportunity and then let Sue Swan (Surrey LSC's SEESEL 2012 Coordinator) know (sue-swan@fsmail.net). Sue will then follow up any leads to support and advise them how to make applications.
9. Eagle Radio - Community Campaign
Eagle Radio’s Community Campaign have secured over £160,000 in Government funding to put 24 Community & Voluntary Groups and Charities through an informal learning programme where they will learn technological skills and will be provided a platform on Eagle Radio to promote themselves.
Starting in October this year and finishing in March 2010 we will work with 24 groups from the 3rd Sector across Surrey & Hampshire. Eagle Radio in partnership with Guildford College together with Surrey Community Action are now seeking initial interest from the 3rd Sector.
If you are interested in receiving further information about the application process or the eligibility of your group or any group you work with who may qualify, then please email community@964eagle.co.uk.

11. Alternative Curriculum Project
Woking YMCA will be launching a new Alternative Curriculum Project in January 2010 for young people in school years 10 and 11. The Project will cover a variety of courses, all accredited by ASDAN.
In preparation for this we have booked an ASDAN ‘inset’ training day at the Ypod for our team which will cover the Short Course Awards and the Wider Key Skills qualifications.
Because ASDAN are very busy at the moment we were struggling to book a date for this term but we have been able to secure a cancellation date on Friday 11th September.
For more information about these courses please see ASDAN’s website at www.asdan.org.uk or below where I have included some text from the site.
We have a limited number of spaces available for staff from other organisations at a cost of no more than £80 per person (including an information pack). The exact cost will depend on the number of spaces we are able to fill – the more spaces we fill the cheaper it we will be able to offer it. We are also pleased to be able to offer a further discount to other YMCAs.
If you are already running these courses, or are planning to run these courses in the future this is a great opportunity to get an insight into how the courses work and to get the necessary training to run the courses, all at a discounted rate.
If anyone would be interested in booking some spaces on this course, please contact Paul Langtree at Woking YMCA on 01483 757 160 or

13. Youth groups to be offered safeguarding help
A scheme to help youth organisations meet their statutory duty to safeguard young people is to be launched later this month. The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS) will launch the scheme on 29 September after it found that small youth groups needed help to meet their duties under Section 11 of the Children Act 2004.
She said: "We know smaller organisations do not always have the resources or time necessary to implement complex quality frameworks. Neither do they need to have sophisticated policies or systems if their operations are simple. Many smaller organisations do not know where to go for appropriate advice."
But David Seward, chief executive of Berkshire Association of Clubs for Young People, said there were already local initiatives to address safeguarding issues. He said: "We are all in the field doing different things locally, such as working with local safeguarding children boards. It would be nice if there was a collective voice nationally. Resources are becoming limited and many things are being duplicated."
The Safe Systems scheme will feed into NCVYS's wider quality assurance scheme Sound Systems.
