Mark your diaries for the HE Convention 19 & 20 March 2008, held at the University of Surrey.  Click here for more details and a Lecture programme

2: 'Knowing Where to Study? ‘Fees, Bursaries and Fair Access’  report
A report from the Sutton Trust ‘Knowing Where to Study? ‘Fees, Bursaries and Fair Access’ was published on 14 February 2008.  The report looks at access to university and specifically the importance of financial considerations and financial support and advice when young people decide whether Higher Education is an option for them.  The report is available at www.suttontrust.com.

3:  In-volve SYPS Address Changes

Dear Colleague,
I would like to update you on some of the current changes to our services. We are developing our services in order to meet with our client needs. To achieve this effectively we will be closing down our Redhill office and utilising other facilities in the area to widen our outreach work, with our Guildford office as a central base.  Please click here for full details of the changes

Kind regards

Shawn Bent

Service Manager

4:  Chris Gladwell leaves Connexions Surrey

We bid a sad farewell to Chris Gladwell on 22nd February.  Many of you knew Chris via the Adapt support he offered so from now on, all ADAPT and Citrix enquiries need to be directed to the ADAPT helpdesk on 01329 229100 or email adapthelp@vtplc.com

PAs filling in interventions spreadsheets need to send them to Carlos Lapina (carlos.lapina@surreycc.gov.uk )

Any other queries to go to Jackie Bruder (jackie.bruder@surreycc.gov.uk ) or Lara Pereira (lara.pereira@surreycc.gov.uk ).

5:  Valentine's Ball at Twister Redhill

Lots of from….. Twister Redhill

Twister Redhill celebrated Valentines by hosting Valentines Ball for their sister Youth Clubs.

Twisters Spelthorne, Guildford and Epsom were invited to Twister Redhill by the Redhill members who put together an evening of music, activities and treats for everyone. On arrival, each guest was presented with a button hole and on their departure they were each given a handmade Valentines card thanking them for visiting and wishing them a happy Valentines day.

The Reigate & Banstead Youth Development Services provided mixing decks for the music together with state of the art disco lighting and glitter ball. Twister Redhill’s resident expert, ‘DJ Sealsey’, then took charge of the tunes and was a resounding success.

It was a great opportunity for all the Twister Youth Clubs to get to know each other and Twister Guildford are already planning on hosting a Twister picnic during the Summer.

Twister clubs are open to all Surrey lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning young people aged 13-19.  For more information contact Sam King, Connexions PA, LGBTQ Young People, Surrey Youth Development Services on:

6:  Introduction to Assessment (APIR/CAF)
The next 'Introduction to assessment (APIR/CAF)' course is running on 27th & 28th March 08 (previously called 'APIR training')  This is a two day course that introduces new PAs to the concept of referral, engagement with young people, assessment, planning, implementation of agreed action and review.  It is an opportunity for PAs to network with other PAs and discuss aspects of their practice. It aims to encourage best practice when working with hard to help clients and is particularly useful for Unit 1 of the LDSS NVQ level 4 (Identifying risk)  Please discuss attendance with your line manager, complete a nomination form (available on the Surrey Connexions website under PA resources) and send to Bernadette Slack at VT Careers Management, Sutton House, Weyside Park, Catteshall Lane, Godalming, Surrey GU7 1XJ

Ideally PAs should have completed the e.learning 'Introducing Connexions' in advance of the training.  This module is also available on the Surrey Connexions website under 'PA Resources' .

7:  Mentoring Projects
Just a note to let you know that there are currently three projects running that are directed at the very hard-to-reach NEET. They are being run by Guildford YMCA, Woking YMCA and Rainer. This work does not duplicate the work of Connexions Personal Advisers, but instead underpins and supplements it so that time-intensive focused work with the young person will enable them to establish a ‘personal pathway’ and ensure that they are ready for you to take them on and move them quickly into education, employment or training.

For further details, please contact the following:

We are also contracting with Surrey Chambers of Commerce that they put business mentors in selected schools to work with young people at risk of disengaging who might benefit from knowing more about the world of work.

Job Vacancies for Young People

Did you know that there are a wide range of job vacancies, vacant college places and training courses all over the county waiting to be filled? As the majority don’t have particularly demanding entry requirements, they are an ideal choice for many NEET youngsters.

Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with.

NEET Activities Flyer  - Jan-March 2008

Please find attached a document highlighting a range of NEET activities taking place for young people around the County from January until the end of March 2008.  The aim of the document is to give you an indication of the types of activities/programmes that are available or are currently being undertaken.

The next edition of the flyer will cover the period April - June 2008 and ideally I would like to distribute it to you all week commencing 17th March which would allow you some time to speak with your NEET young people and potentially get them signed up onto a course/programme that may be starting within this period.

If you are involved in any NEET (16-18 year old) activities or know of any activities for NEET young people that are taking place between January and the end of March 2008 then please let me have the following details by 14th March and I will include the programme in the next flyer:

  1. Course title
  2. Brief description, to include, number of weeks, core content, referral process etc
  3. Agency/provider
  4. Dates
  5. Time
  6. Costs if any incurred by young person
  7. Contact name
  8. Contact details i.e. telephone number and email address
