1: Surrey Opportunities Fair Briefing. #2 – 19th January 2009 Update!!!!
Confirmed details for The Surrey Opportunities Fair 2009
Who for NEET, improvers, and other vulnerable youngsters aged 16-19
Date 4th March 2009
Venue Guildford Spectrum
Timing Event open 12 noon – 8 p.m.
We have already recruited over 50 exhibition stands for the Surrey Opportunities Fair and are continuing to work hard to recruit more.
Even in these difficult economic times, more than half of our exhibitors are employers (with suitable vacancies!) and we also have commitment from organizations recruiting apprentices, along with a broad range of training providers and specialist advice.
Every NEET youngster should get something from the event!
To make sure that it’s as appealing for them as possible we are planning plenty of extras – the chance for attendees to win various goodies, free food, and some special activities – more details later.
The free transport programme will enable youngsters from all over Surrey to get there easily. We’ve consulted with Connexions Centre managers to identify the key pick up points, and will add more to suit other young people on advice from PAs and practitioners. Of course young people are also encouraged to make their own way there, along with their parents or friends as appropriate.
Heavy promotion of the event to your NEET, improver and other vulnerable clients starts now! Please make sure you tell them all about it and encourage them to attend because in the current climate, now more than ever it’s vital that they are aware of the opportunities available to them. Next week we’ll be sending invitations to them directly and providing you with copies of what we’ve sent together with marketing materials and tickets so that you can target young people who will benefit.
Regular updates will follow in the weeks leading up to the event.

You are welcome to discuss with your school hand-picking Year 11 youngsters who are currently still on school roll but who are likely to end up NEET this summer, who would benefit from attending the Fair. With the prior approval of your school, please contact me to discuss your requirements before inviting any young people so we can manage numbers. Please note that this is not a blanket invitation for all Year 11s but only to be offered to the most vulnerable youngsters.
Colleagues in the YDS, YJS and voluntary sector who also work with NEET or pre-NEET youngsters are also welcome to bring their clients to the event. To help our planning, it’s important that you let me know names and numbers of young people involved, and whether you will want them to use the transport provided, as soon as possible.

3: Surrey schools among the best
Surrey County Council is among the top-performing authorities in the country for GCSE results, according to Department for Children, Schools and Families figures released today. Nearly seven out of 10 pupils in Surrey achieve five or more A* to C grades and nearly six out of 10 achieve five or more A* to C grades including English and maths – putting the county council in the top 20 authorities nationally. All 53 secondary schools the council is responsible for have met the Government’s target of 30% of pupils getting five GCSEs at A* to C, including English and maths. Surrey is by far the largest of the 27 authorities where all schools meet the target. More on the figures from the BBC here.

Job Vacancies for Young People
Did you know that there are a wide range of job vacancies, vacant college places and training courses all over the county waiting to be filled? As the majority don’t have particularly demanding entry requirements, they are an ideal choice for many NEET youngsters.
Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with.
