2:  Police search for unsung heroes
Surrey Police has launched new awards to recognise people who make an outstanding contribution to their community and actively help to keep Surrey a safe and pleasant place to live. The awards, sponsored by the University of Surrey, have been launched this year to say thank you to unsung heroes. The aim is to recognise people who willingly give up their time to help others or who have done something truly courageous. Possible nominees include the person who runs a local football team, a neighbour who helps someone with their weekly shopping, or the people that organise the annual village fete. There are also awards for courageous acts such as speaking up about crime and supporting police activity. For more information click here

3:  Comprehensive course details at the Surrey Area Prospectus
08-09 is the first academic year for which www.surrey-area-prospectus.co.uk will be fully functioning as the resource for information on all educational options and courses available for young people in Surrey. On it you will find information and links for academic and vocational courses from 14-16 and 16+, together with work based learning available throughout the county. If you haven’t had the opportunity to look at the website, then I urge you to do so.
To help you use the website, and to build awareness and interest amongst young people, their parents/carers and teachers, we have produced a range of posters, leaflets, school diary stickers, and keeper-cards to promote and explain how the area prospectus works. Following consultation with a number of colleagues at the PA Conference, and with Sarah Gooding’s approval, it has been agreed that this material will be distributed to schools via the PA team.
Budget restrictions have meant that we have been unable to produce sufficient for every single pupil, but there should be enough for 50%-65% of them, and this will be sent to the Centres on a pro-rata basis for you to distribute onwards. Please give some thought to who needs to be involved in each school whether it should be head of year, the school careers officer or others. In addition, we leave it to you to use this material tactically, so if you feel that it would be best to up-weight the amount of material being given to a particular school, this is your decision; we need you to ensure that this material is utilised as effectively as possible. Please note that in light of this resource, we won’t be producing a Choices 16+ course grid booklet in future.
The Surrey Area Prospectus promotional material is for the 08-09 academic year, so we plan to send it to the Centres for late August/early September – if anyone needs it earlier then please let me know.
In addition we have put copies of all of promotional material together with lesson plans and other resources onto a CD and we will send all PAs a copy is this. If there is anything else that you think we can do to promote the Surrey Area Prospectus, then please do let me know.

4:  Delivering best practice in schools and colleges
We want to continue to develop excellent access to our services for young people – and way that PAs work in schools and colleges is always a vital element in how young people access the Connexions service.
If young people accessing your work in school or college are hampered or discouraged by the facilities, appointment booking process etc, please let me know. It may be that we can offer practical support through our school partnership agreements to help improve things.
On the other hand if you have ‘best practice’ examples that would be helpful to share with colleagues within the Connexions Partnership I would be very pleased to hear details from you so that I can report them more widely.
In short, if there is anything in your working practise in school or college that would help others, or if there is any areas where you need help, please report to me so that I can share information and help develop Connexions facilities in school.

Thank you!

5:  Genistar launch
Every so often an opportunity comes along that can help us, but in our daily rush to keep things rolling, we ignore it.  I’ve had the pleasure of knowing an organisation called Genistar since it started in July 2007 and they have been doing some great things in the area of Financial Education and are rapidly expanding around the UK and have decided to launch in the Woking Area.
This is worthwhile and important that’s why I am recommending you come on Thursday 31st July at 7.15pm for a 7.30 start to the Woking YMCA (map attached) and listen  - it will be time well spent
Make up your own mind, naturally, but its my sincere belief you will find the short period of time it takes to be time well spent.

Kind regards

Many of you will have seen Peer Productions perform at the Surrey Annual PA Conference so you may be interested to know that we are currently recruiting actors for next year.  Please forward our details to any young people who you think might be interested.

Peer Productions is a revolutionary youth arts training company based in Woking Surrey.  Each year we provide a small group of talented young actors (aged 16 – 23 years) with free training in theatre, film and peer education.  Many of our volunteers are gap year students planning to apply for drama school in the following year, others are not in education training or employment or a looking for a new career path.  No formal qualifications are required and places are offered on the basis of an informal workshop audition.

As well as receiving master-classes from industry professionals, actor, media and facilitator training, young people taking part also have the opportunity to tour new plays to secondary schools and community groups.  Full support is provided for those who wish to audition for drama school with ex Peer Productions’ actors gaining places at acclaimed drama schools including East15, Central School of Speech and Drama, The American Academy of Dramatic Art (New York) and Rose Bruford.

11:  Did you know around 450 children start smoking every day in the UK?

Support and advice for young people from the ages of 12-18 around stopping smoking is currently being developed by Surrey PCT. This new aspect of the Stop Smoking Service spreads countywide.

Awareness raising activities are frequently taking place with information and visual aids such as a big jar of black sticky tar showing the substance that sticks to lungs and can lead to cancers, a big jar of phlegm (not real phlegm!) showing how smoking can affect people’s respiratory health, real-life pictures of lungs blackened by tar, rotten teeth etc and our very popular carbon monoxide (CO) monitors. This simple breathalyser test shows the amount of carbon monoxide found in a person’s lungs. This poisonous gas helps to starve the body of oxygen often leaving a smoker feeling very short of breath. This is extremely useful in identifying the CO levels in a smoker or indeed a non-smoker and helps to raise awareness of the effects of second hand smoke for those non-smokers who may well live with someone who smokes for example.

We are beginning to run support groups, mainly in schools currently, but are in desperate need for those working with young people to be trained up to offer stop smoking support.

For more information on free training, awareness raising stands or if you’d be interested to know more about what we do, please contact Helen Platts, Tobacco Control Specialist on 01483 532828 or Helen.platts@surreypct.nhs.uk

Job Vacancies for Young People
Did you know that there are a wide range of job vacancies, vacant college places and training courses all over the county waiting to be filled? As the majority don’t have particularly demanding entry requirements, they are an ideal choice for many NEET youngsters.

Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with.

NEET Activities Flyer  - July - Sept 2008

Please find attached a document highlighting a range of NEET activities taking place for young people around the County from July until the end of September 2008.  The aim of the document is to give you an indication of the types of activities/programmes that are available or are currently being undertaken.

The next edition of the flyer will cover the period October - December 2008 and ideally I would like to distribute it to you all week commencing 16th September which would allow you some time to speak with your NEET young people and potentially get them signed up onto a course/programme that may be starting within this period.

If you are involved in any NEET (16-18 year old) activities or know of any activities for NEET young people that are taking place between October and the end of December 2008 then please let me have the following details by 12th September and I will include the programme in the next flyer:

  1. Course title
  2. Brief description, to include, number of weeks, core content, referral process etc
  3. Agency/provider
  4. Dates
  5. Time
  6. Costs if any incurred by young person
  7. Contact name
  8. Contact details i.e. telephone number and email address
