Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) 2009/10
EMA Guarantee:
• For the first time, returning EMA learners do not need to reapply. The EMA guarantee means that any learner who has been paid EMA during the 2008/09 academic year is automatically eligible for support at the same level until the end of the academic year in which they turn 19.
• A learner returning for 2009/10 EMA year should only reapply if their household income has reduced since their previous application.
• Learners who received an EMA payment during 2008/09 will automatically
receive a Continuing Entitlement letter and an EMA Agreement before the end of May 2009. Learners will then take this letter to their Learning Provider.
• The Continuing Entitlement letter will contain the Learner Support Reference Number, which will be used to add the learner to the payment system in exactly the same way as you currently use the Notice of Entitlement (NoE) for brand new learners.
• The Helpline Assessment & Payment Body (HAPB) will be writing to Learner’s parents or carer’s shortly to explain this process. Any Learner who does not receive a Continuing Entitlement letter and an Agreement by mid June should contact the Learner Support Helpline on 0800 121 8989.
E2E Learners:
• Those learners who are on E2E programmes of study that will extend beyond 31st August 2009 will be sent a letter outlining their options nearer the time.
• Learners who enrolled on E2E programmes of study that will not extend beyond 31st August 2009 and have not received a full income assessment in the 2008/09 EMA year are not eligible for the EMA Guarantee and should re-apply for support in 2009/10.
• Please note the E2E provider declaration for E2E learners is now included on the application form. This section will need to be completed by the E2E provider before sending this to the HAPB.
Applying Early:
• 56% of Surrey schools have ordered EMA Application forms for 2009/10 as at 27th April 2009. Please ensure Year 11 leavers are aware of the EMA scheme and have access to the application form before they go on study leave. Young people applying early will receive their Notice of Entitlement in advance of starting their course in September, helping them to receive the support they need. With Study leave looming PA’s who are visiting schools are encouraged to support students in ordering application forms/marketing materials and getting the Apply Early message out.

10. Safety Online for Young People
We think that safety on-line for young people is really important and so we're trying to find out about how young people in Surrey are using technology.
If you would be kind enough to encourage your clients to complete our survey to tell us how they are using technology, what they think E-safety is and why it is important, then that we can start to understand what we need to do to make the Internet a safer place.
The survey only takes about 5 minutes to do and they can take part by following this link: www.surveymonkey.com
The closing date is 12 June. Thank you very much for your help!
Did you know that there are a wide range of job vacancies, vacant college places and training courses all over the county waiting to be filled? As the majority don’t have particularly demanding entry requirements, they are an ideal choice for many NEET youngsters.
