The Connexions Surrey bulletin is produced every two weeks and we aim to keep you up to date with current issues and aware of news that is relevant to your day to day jobs. The bulletin sits alongside the PA Resource section of the website.

Job Opportunities for Young People: Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with. Please also direct your young people to our website and encourage them to spend a few minutes completing a few questions which will open up the database of jobs relevant and available to them.

NCFE Award in Safeguarding Children and Young People Level 2

 

(All Voluntary Sector Personal Advisors who have not been able to complete SCC Safeguarding Children Training Modules 1-3 must enrol on to this new course. VTPAs will be able to attend a new in house Safeguarding Children course or refresher in the new year, so need not apply to do this course. Please bear in mind that Safeguarding Children must be updated every 3 years.)

 

 

This course takes the form of up to 9 weeks’ distance learning after enrolment. Course material is divided into the following 3 sections:

 

1. Explore and understand roles in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people - Learning outcomes include:

Identification of the ways in which children and young people can be harmed.

Investigation of the different types of abuse and the importance of a healthy environment.

Introduction of skills required for effective communication with a range of different professional agencies.

 

2. Understand legislation and policies which safeguard children and young people - Learning outcomes include:

Identification of different legislation and policies which safeguard children and young people.

Identification of the role of the Local Safeguarding Children Board and the Common Assessment Framework for children and young people and knowledge of how to use them.

 

3. Develop personal skills to contribute to the safeguarding of children and young people - Learning outcomes include:

Understanding of the role and value parents and carers can have in supporting their children and young people to achieve positive outcomes.

Development of skills required for promoting personal safety for children and young people and methods for protecting yourself from allegations of abuse.

Alternatively there are enrolment sessions held at NESCOT (Ewell) which are held on Wednesdays at either 10:30am or 13:00pm. Introduction to ADAPT

Aim - To provide training on the use of Adapt and obtain a good understanding of the system. As a result of the course participants should have a good understanding of Adapt and be able to record work with clients.  The course covers:

 

  1. Adding and amending records for clients
  2. Recording contacts/plans
  3. Recording letters and telephone contacts
  4. Joining and leaving clients to NEET
  5. Recording a Potential/Actual Endorsement
  6. Recording Group Sessions etc
  7. Be able to record work with providers/opportunities
  8. Adding new providers
  9. Amending records
  10. Recording a visit
  11. Adding and submitting to an opportunity
  12. Recording the outcome of a submission
  13. Putting an opportunity on HOLD and then back on to LIVE & Cancelling an Opportunity

Assessment and Intervention in Violent Teenage Relationships

 

Target Group:

Practitioners in all agencies who work with young people

N.B Safeguarding Module 1 and 2 are pre-requisite for SCC staff 

Non SCC employees should have undertaken their own Safeguarding Children mandatory training or the NESCOT distance-learning course. 

 

Aim:

To provide an opportunity to develop an understanding of the physical, emotional and sexual violence experienced by young people and to explore intervention options

Learning Outcomes

 

Outcomes:

By the end of the course participants will have gained an understanding of recent research in relation to this subject

Explored the complexities of violence in teenage dating relationships

Examined the causes and consequences of such behaviour for the young person and others

Considered a risk assessment framework to guide practitioners in their task

Examined intervention options

SCC employees are entitled to a place on the course free of charge. Places will need to be reserved using the same form and SCC PAs will need to have completed prerequisite courses as indicated on the form.

CAF One Day Multi-Agency training for Users- now a Half Day training course

 

Aim:

To enable participants to gain a good understanding of the purpose and process of the Common Assessment Framework (CAF). To enable participants to use the Common Assessment Framework in practice to improve outcomes for children, young people and families.

 

Conditions of acceptance of a place on this course:

All participants must have agreed with their manager to attend the course.

Please note: As these courses are now half a day, lunch we will no longer be provided. However, feel free to take your pack lunch. 

 

 

CAF Half Day Lead Professional Training

 

This course remains a half-day course, starting at 1.30pm to finish at 4.30pm

To book a place, please select CAF Half Day Lead Professional Training from the CAF Training page. Most dates are now combined with the Half Day Multi-Agency Training as explained above.

If you want to book onto either of the courses mentioned above please select CAF Half Day Multi-Agency training for Users from the CAF training page and complete the e-booking form.

 

Prior to attending either the CAF Half Day Multi-Agency training and the CAF Half Day Lead Professional Training, it is mandatory to complete the CAF Basic Awareness e-learning course and the CAF Lead Professional e-learning course. If not completed, this will affect your learning on the day.

It is also advisable to complete the Information Sharing e-learning course and the Integrated Working e-learning course.

These courses are intended to give all staff and partner agencies a good understanding of the CAF assessment, the role of a Lead Professional and Integrated working and are open to all Connexions Personal Advisers.

 

Bookings can be made on both the internal and external SCC websites.

 

To book a place on the Multi-Agency Training for Users Course - click on the e-booking form links as above.

Select a suitable date and venue, click on 2009 at the top. This will put the dates in order from January 2009. The form will display by clicking on the selected date.

Complete and submit the form. Please allow a few minutes for your form to go through the system.

Make sure you print a copy to keep a record of your booking with the reference number and details of the venue.

CAF training -Half day refresher course for users

 

This course has been designed for professionals who have received training eight to twelve months ago and for professionals who are already familiar with the ECM Agenda and the Assessment Framework

It is vital at this time for the CAF implementation across the County, which is gathering pace that all professionals are up to date and secure in their understanding of the CAF 5-Step process.

Attendance will give an opportunity to professionals to update their knowledge on current CAF processes and new arrangements to query if a CAF Assessment has already been undertaken on a child.

Young people and mental health

Aim:

To understand the emerging signs of mental health problems in young people.

 

Content:

This course focuses on current thinking and practice in the expanding field of young people and mental health. When is an apparent mental health problem ‘just part of growing up’? What are the emerging signs of mental illness in younger people? How, as professionals, can we assess and intervene effectively whilst being aware of the dangers of stigmatisation?

 

Target audience:

This 1-day course will benefit all those who work directly with children and young people and their families

 

Objectives:

By the end of the training participants should be able to:

Identify the developmental tasks of adolescence,

Identify severe emotional/behavioural disturbances in young people,

Understand current development in the law and service development,

Develop risk management skills and ways of effective working,

Develop skills in working with the young person within the family context.

Conference for Foster Carers - Let’s Raise Healthy Outcomes for Looked After Children.

  1. Focus on sexual health advice, including information on safe sex, sexually transmitted diseases and the symptoms. It will give information and advice on promoting good sexual health to young people.

7. Army bursaries of £1000 per year available now!

 

If you know someone who may be thinking about a career in the armed services, then this exciting opportunity could be the perfect entry point. The Army will pay you a tax-free Bursary to study before you go on to serve with them, and this can include an additional £1000 bonus payment on successful completion of your course.

Currently training bursaries of £1000 a year are being offered to help you complete Further or Higher education courses so you’ll have qualifications under your belt before you join the Army with a guaranteed job. Courses are taking place at the Providers premises and involve fun learning to engage young people onto further courses.  The idea of the offer will be to give learners a gentle approach back into learning and to offer clear guidance and support to enable them to make informed choices.  Priority for this course is NEET Hotspots, Reigate, Banstead, Woking, Guildford and Spelthorne.  Emphasis will be on recruiting the hardest reach vulnerable learners.

As we are doing all of our consultation with young people through facebook  could PA's try to come up with some themed activities that may be coming up? Eg Condom awareness week, international youth day etc. or general areas that would benefit from young people's feedback?

Social networking is an excellent platform for engaging with and linking Young People.

We have used opportunities for consultation, prizes, and days out and meeting new friends as incentives to get young people to join.
