Job Opportunities for Young People
Did you know that there are a wide range of job vacancies, vacant college places and training courses all over the county waiting to be filled? As the majority don’t have particularly demanding entry requirements, they are an ideal choice for many NEET youngsters.
Our Centres produce regular listings of local opportunities. Vacancy Bulletins are now listed on the Connexions website Job search page and you can also pick up copies from your local Centre to share with the young people you are currently working with.
NEET Activities Flyer - 2009
The aim of this section is to provide a summary of the types of activities, events or programmes that are currently available or upcoming, which may interest and be of benefit to NEET young people.
We hope that you can pass on the information and encourage NEET young people with a view to potentially getting them signed up for an activity that may be starting soon.
Alternatively if you are involved in, or know of any NEET (16-18 year old) activities that are taking place this year, please provide the following details and we will include it in the flyer:
- Course/Event title
- Brief description, to include, number of weeks, core content, referral process etc

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) - Everybody’s business workshop and e-learning
At times, many parents and young people feel stressed, anxious, down or angry. Sometimes these feelings can get in the way of coping with everyday life. This struggle to cope can show itself in many ways, such as angry outbursts, feelings of helplessness, struggles to get to work or school, and problems in getting on with one another.
Everybody’s Business at http://learning.camhs.org.uk is a conversion of the trainers’ package into on-line learning materials for workers to access either individually or in groups. It contains extensive participant reading and activities. The group-based on-line learning will use trained e-moderators to help participants to work their way though these materials, so no-one needs to do it alone. All people participating in the group learning will get a certificate for their Continuing Professional Development. Registration workshops followed by end of learning sessions have been set up on the following dates to assist in learning and ensure that PAs are confident in using the materials

Dear Colleagues
We are all monitoring the current swine flu situation closely and we are working with and receiving advice from partner agencies, particularly the PCT and the Health Protection Agency.
We have received the following advice from the HPA:
"Schools need to take no specific action regarding swine flu. Any children who have been to an affected country, or had close contact with someone who has, and have become unwell, should stay at home and contact their GP or NHS Direct for advice and possible follow up. In the meantime, the advice contained on the HPA website (http://www.hpa.org.uk/) is being updated daily and provides plenty of information. And of course, it is always sensible infection control advice to observe good hand hygiene and to follow the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it…’ advice re coughs and sneezes."
There is a video to support the ''catch it, bin it, kill it'' advice at http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pandemic-flu/Pages/Prevention.aspx , along with quite a lot of ''Mexican swine flu'' information at http://www.nhs.uk/news/2009/04April/Pages/Swineflulatest.aspx (or get to these via http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/homepage.aspx). “
Advice to Surrey residents can also be found on the PCT website http://www.surreyhealth.nhs.uk/
The old adage 'coughs and sneezes spread diseases' still holds firm today. Research has revealed that even in this modern age many people do not understand what a huge difference good hand and respiratory hygiene makes. Using and disposing of tissues correctly and washing hands can help reduce the spread of germs leading to colds, flu and other illnesses by raising awareness.
Please follow the PCT link above for full details and posters for The Department of Health's 'Catch it, Bin it, Kill it' campaign as well as advice on washing hands with soap and water.
The messages are simple:
Catch it – germs spread easily. Always carry tissues and use them to catch your cough or sneeze
Bin it – germs can live for several hours on tissues. Dispose of your tissue as soon as possible.
Kill it – hands can transfer germs to every surface you touch. Clean your hands as soon as you can.
Would you please print off copies of the 'Catch it, Bin it, Kill it' and hand washing posters and display them prominently around your school and post them on your website. Please also consider the best ways of getting this message home to parents.
There has been some discussion about the use of alcohol-gel. This may be useful if there is no ready access to washing facilities but the HPA advice is that washing with soap and water is better in most circumstances. Currently the advice is that placing pump-action alcohol-gel dispensers at entrances and at strategic points around the school is not necessary.
Clearly very young children will need to be supervised and assisted with good hand washing.
Now is the time to ensure that you are prepared for any escalation of the outbreak. It would be sensible to,
Check your Business Continuity Plan –
Check your staff contact details -- You may need to contact them quickly to pass on information
Keep staff informed – Update your staff and forward on any new information
We will update you as and when necessary. As well as the very useful HPA website above, please inform parents and staff of the information we carry on the Surrey Alert website. http://www.surreyalert.info/
