Getting ready for the gym, pool or a class
> Arrange to meet friends if possible - training partners are a good form of motivation - and it’s more fun!> Take clothing to ‘cover up’ after exercise for both safety and health reasons.
> Check the club or pool’s closing times - it is good to train when it is not busy, but it might not be so comfortable to leave when most other people have gone.
> Get to know the staff, and if problems arise seek help.
> Exercise is a great way to make you feel good about yourself. People who feel and look confident are less likely to be seen as an ‘easy target’.
> Park in a well lit area, close to the building and reverse into spaces where possible.
> Don’t leave valuables on view in the car.
> Avoid giving personal details to people you don’t know well - clubs are a great place for gossip. Be careful with workout cards that may have personal information on them.
> If you feel uncomfortable with someone in the sauna or steam room get up and leave.
> When leaving the building - get your keys out of your bag ready. If you are at all concerned in the car park head straight back to reception not to your car.
> Never accept lifts home - if you will be too tired to walk, arrange transport beforehand!
> Never assume that you know everything about new people that you may meet other than they share your health club or pool.
> Never assume that people you meet once a week are ‘friends’ - clubs are great places to meet people with similar interests. However, take your time to get to know and trust new people.
> Never assume that it won’t happen to you - always be prepared no matter what your age or gender.
