Safety
Safety can be a worry for us all. Worried about walking home at night? Or being sexually assaulted? Feel someone's stalking you? What about using chat rooms? Getting abusive 'phone calls or emails? Young people can sometimes feel very threatened and afraid. So, do you just stay in? What about self-defence? You could carry an alarm? How can you feel safer on the web and on the streets?
Taking steps to stay safe!
There are all kinds of crimes. Burglary, rape, shoplifting, driving without proper insurance, trespassing, harassment, assault and battery are all criminal offences. Most people are most worried about violent crime such as muggings but there are easy things you can do to minimise the risk.
* If you are walking anywhere, especially at night tell someone where you are going, when you expect to get there and try to keep to well lit, busy areas.
* Try to make arrangements for a lift home if possible.
* Try to get someone you trust to walk with you.
* Never accept a lift from an unmarked or unknown taxi services.
* Carry a screech alarm in your hand, not in your bag or Pocket.
* Try to wear shoes that will allow you to run if needed.
* Take a self-defence class.
To lower the risk of crime at home make sure your home has good locks on the doors and windows, and that you use them.
