Emergency Contraception
If you have sexual intercourse and have not used contraception, or your contraception failed, there is the ‘Morning After Pill’, or Emergency Contraception.
This is not a regular method of contraception and should only be used occasionally in emergencies, hence its name.
If emergency contraception is to be effective, it must be taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse. You have three days in which to act to try to prevent a pregnancy, but the sooner the better.
Help is available from:
> Any GP who provides contraceptive services
> Any Contraceptive/Sexual Health/Family Planning/GUM Clinic
> Most pharmacies are able to sell emergency contraception (about £20) to over 16’s. You may be asked a few questions to make sure it is suitable for you.
> Hospital Accident and Emergency Depts. (Casualty) may be able to help.
